As they walked through the meadow, Clive's bouncing tail was nowhere to be seen, so Pod thought he was probably lost looking for meadow mice in the forest. He must have been right, because soon they found the mice, in the meadow, off course, and they hadn't seen head not tail of Tree Topper Clive all day. The river rat gave a pathetic apology coupled with a promise to forbid it amongst river rats to eat anything other than what they normally would eat.

The main mouse, for his gallant part, forgave the river rats' impulsive eating and mentioned that the ill fated mouse did happen to be “the black gerbil” of the family. So all things considered, the peace treaty between the river rats and the meadow mice was a downright farce. Pixie Pod however was the only Pixie in the whole of the forest and the meadow, and as witness to such a chat between animals was the driving force for Peace, or more correctly for the stopping of meadow mice ending up on dinner plates.
